STANLEY WHITNEY

Stanley Whitney’s investigation of color is primordial. As Bob Nickas states in his book Painting Abstraction: New Elements in Abstract Painting, “In the work of Stanley Whitney, color and structure, two fundamental aspects of abstract painting, become color as structure.”

Stanley Whitney was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and received his BFA from Kansas City Art Institute and his MFA from Yale University. He has lived in New York City since graduating from Yale in 1972. He is represented by Team Gallery in New York, NY and Christine Koenig Gallery in Vienna, Austria. Stanley Whitney has shown numerously in the United States and in Europe. He was recently included in a three-person show at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art in Overland Park, KS and also had work featured in The Jewel Thief at the Tang Museum in Saratoga Springs, NY (2010-2011). Stanley Whitney’s work is part of museum and private collections worldwide.

Stanley Whitney currently lives and works in New York City and Parma, Italy and is a Professor Emeritus of Painting and Drawing at Tyler School of Art, Temple University, PA.
