Joey Kötting was born in England in 1966. He received his BFA in 1988 from Brighton Polytechnic, East Sussex, England; working towards his degree, he also studied at St. Martins School of Art in London and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He received an MFA from the Tyler School of Art in 1991, and currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
Kötting is a painter whose activities include performance, photography and video. He uses his body, face and physical activities as a canvas. His work intentionally references the history of painting and figurative art; drips of blood-like paint mask his features and suggest the marks of gestural abstraction and action painting.
